Light fixtures have a tendency to attract dust and small insects, not something anyone wants for their house, but they can also be a hassle to clean. Step stools, ladders, awkward shapes, dust falling everywhere—yikes!
Some of those things can't be avoided when it comes to cleaning your light fixtures, but by knowing the most effective way to clean each type of light fixture, you can make cleaning them a lot easier.
Chandeliers look intimidating, but if you know what to do, they aren't so scary after all. "The Accidental Housewife" recommends this easy method: hang an umbrella upside down from the chandelier and blow off dust with a blow dryer. Then take a small brush and get anything left behind. Finally, polish the light bulbs and crystals for a beautiful shine without too much work!
Lamps are pretty straightforward: dust the base with a cloth dampened with vinegar and water. If your lampshade is sturdy enough, you can dust it with the same cloth; otherwise, very gently hold your vacuum cleaner with the smallest attachment against it to pull away the dust.
Globes & Sconces can be made extremely simple if you have a dishwasher: just put them on the top rack. Leave some space to they don't bump into each other, then run the wash as you normally would. If no dishwasher is available, wash them by hand in warm, soapy water, just like doing dishes. Whichever method you use, give them time to dry before reattaching them.
Light Bulbs are easy, but it's important to make sure you let them cool first, since light bulbs can hold onto heat for several minutes after being turned off. Just wipe them down with a cloth to remove dust.
Ceiling Fans are often part of light fixtures, so they need to be addressed, too. The easiest way to tackle a ceiling fan is with a pillow case. Slide a pillow case onto a fan blade and slowly wipe down the blade on both sides. The dust will fall into the pillow case—no mess!
