Of course, if you have time, a clean house is the best way to greet guests. Some housekeeping services even offer same-day service for events to take the stress of cleaning away.
But sometimes, there’s no time to go from messy to fabulous—how can you take your messy house and make your unexpected company believe your house is as clean as you wish it was? These tricks will get you there!
#1: The Smell. If there is an odor in your house, it will be the first thing people notice—the nose will react before the eyes! Thankfully, there are easy fixes. If you have 20 minutes, spray some vinegar into the air. When the vinegar evaporates, you will be left with fresh air.
If there’s no time for that, try this sneaky trick: spray a generous amount of air freshener onto your outdoor welcome mat. When your friends step on the mat, they will unknowingly kick up a pleasant smell to greet them when they walk in.
#2: Your Floors. A carpet covered in crumbs or a stick kitchen floor will be immediately noticeable, so make sure a quick vacuuming and mopping are on your list—this doesn’t have to be a perfect job, just a quick hit in the rooms that matter. A clean floor gives an impression that the rest of the house is also clean.
#3: The Garbage. It’s such a simple step, but one that makes an impression even if it doesn’t occur to the person visiting—take out the garbage. A fresh, clean garbage bag in the can is another subtle way to indicate cleanliness on a level that might not even register!
#4: Clutter. If you don’t need it, put it out of sight. It’s just like when a child is cleaning their room and shoves all of the clutter under their bed or in a closet—only you will need to go back at some point and deal with the clutter you’ve hidden!
#5: Light. If you do all of those things, open up the curtains, blinds, and windows. Natural light and fresh air trick the eyes and senses into believing the space is fresher than it might actually be. It’s a sneaky trick, but it works.
