If you have a baby or small child, you will probably have tons of little squirty bath toys and rubber ducks for them to play with at bath time. What you are probably not aware of is that these seemingly innocent toys can be a haven for mold and mildew that can affect your baby’s health. Warm bath water gets into the little holes that are normally used for squirting and it doesn’t properly dry out. After a while this damp, warm, dark little hole becomes a paradise for bacteria and mold growth. So, how do you get rid of this mold on your baby’s bath toys? Well, there are a few methods, but obviously when it comes to mold and baby toys, prevention is best.
Well, if you have a close look at your baby’s bath toys, you will see all the little holes where mold can start to grow, so what you can do is seal up these holes with a glue gun. Of course, this will eliminate the toy’s ability to squirt, but it will eliminate the risk of mold growth.
Another way to prevent mold from growing in the first place is to make sure that the bath toys are properly aired and dried after bath time. Make sure that all the water has been squeezed out and set the toys out apart from each other. You can also use a hair dryer or put them out in the sun every day.
You can normally salvage your baby toys by soaking the toys in a strong bleach solution, making sure that you suck the solution into the toys and swirling it around. You can also do this once every few weeks as preventative maintenance. You can boil the toys which will kill the mold and release it from the small crevasses. Another option is to wash them in the dishwasher which will sanitize them.
If none of these methods work and you still find that the toys are dark inside or have areas of mold, then it is probably safest and best to throw them away and get new toys.
